Add competencies, questions, and rating scales
Last updated: July 22, 2026
A scorecard is only useful if it's asking about the right things. This article covers adding questions to a scorecard — including how to represent a competency (like "Problem-solving" or "Communication") and which rating formats are available for each one.
Who can do this: Admin or Super Admin, for the global scorecard template under Settings. Adding a question to a single activity without changing the master template may be open to whoever can edit that activity — not independently confirmed, see Needs Verification.
Where to find it: Settings → Interviews & Scheduling → Scorecards
Add a question to a scorecard
Open the scorecard template — either Add Scorecard to start a new one, or open an existing one to edit it.
Click Add Question.
Choose a format (see below).
Name the question. If it represents a competency you're evaluating, use the competency's name as the question ("Problem-solving," "Stakeholder communication," and so on).
Check This Field Is Mandatory if reviewers must answer it before submitting.
Click Save.
Two fields — Feedback and Overall Evaluation — are always present on every scorecard and can't be edited or removed.
Choose a rating scale or question format
Format | Best used for |
Stars (1–5) | Overall impression, culture fit ratings |
Score (1–10) | Granular skill ratings |
Yes / No | Hard requirements (e.g. "meets minimum qualifications?") |
Open Question | Free-text feedback and observations |
Single Select | Fixed-choice evaluations |
Multi-Select | Multiple applicable attributes |
The four-thumbs scale (double thumbs up / thumbs up / thumbs down / double thumbs down) you may have seen elsewhere in Kula is reserved for Overall Evaluation — it isn't available as a format for individual questions today.
Representing a competency
Kula doesn't have a dedicated "competency" object yet — there's no way to group several competencies under one question with a shared scale, the way some other ATS tools do. Until that ships, the way to evaluate a competency is to add it as its own question: name the question after the competency (e.g., "Technical depth") and pick whichever format fits — Stars or Score work well for this.
For a scorecard covering several competencies, that means one question per competency rather than one grouped question.
Adding a question for just one activity
When you attach a scorecard to a specific interview, assessment, or review activity, you can add extra questions there without changing the global template — those additions apply only to that activity.
Good to know
Open-ended questions have a 500-character limit. This was raised from 250 characters in July 2026 — if you're hitting a limit that looks like 250, you may be on a cached version of the builder; refresh and try again.
New questions appear above older ones, not below. The first question you add ends up at the bottom of the list, and each new one stacks above it — the reverse of what most people expect. Drag questions into the order you want after adding them.
Single-select and multi-select options must be unique within a question — Kula validates against duplicate options.
A competency-grouped question type (multiple competencies under one question, one shared scale) is on the roadmap but not built yet. Add each competency as its own question in the meantime.
FAQ
Is there a way to set up a question with the same four-thumbs scale used in Overall Evaluation? No — that scale is specific to Overall Evaluation. For individual questions, the closest equivalents are Stars (1–5) or Score (1–10). For more, see Linking Scorecards to Stages.
Can I group several competencies into one scorecard question, the way Lever does? Not yet — that's on the roadmap but hasn't shipped. Today, add each competency as its own separate question. For more, see Linking Scorecards to Stages.
I don't have my interview questions ready yet — can I schedule the interview first and add the scorecard later? Yes. Schedule the interview now, and once your questions are ready, edit the interview and select or update the scorecard under the Scorecard section. For more, see Creating and Editing an Interview Plan.
Why does the question I just added show up above the ones I added earlier, instead of below them? This is a known quirk in how new questions are placed — each new question stacks above the previous ones rather than below. Drag questions into the order you want; there's no way to change the default add-order yet. For more, see Linking Scorecards to Stages.
Is there a limit on how long an open-ended question can be? Yes — 500 characters. This was raised from an earlier 250-character limit. For more, see Linking Scorecards to Stages.
