Kula AI overview

Last updated: August 18, 2026

Kula's AI features fall into two groups: Kula Teammates, AI agents that actively work your pipeline (screening, fraud checks, phone scheduling), and a smaller set of built-in AI utilities that assist without acting autonomously (interview notes, resume autofill). This article is a map of what exists, what's included in your plan, and where to go for the detail on each.

Who can do this: Turning Teammates on for the organisation is a Super Admin/Admin action. Adding a teammate to a specific job, or configuring AI Scoring on a job, is available to Super Admin, Admin, and Recruiters with edit access to that job — see the permission note below, since this has a real, non-obvious side effect for Hiring Managers.

Where to find it: Settings → AI & Kula teammates for organisation-level setup. Job → your job → AI Teammates for per-job setup of the Fraud detector, Screener/AI Scoring, and Coordinator. AI Notetaker settings live under interview/scheduling configuration rather than this menu — see "Setting up Shared Calendars for interview scheduling" and related scheduling articles for that setup.

Kula Teammates: the three agents

Fraud detector:

Checks each applicant for fake email addresses, known fraud patterns, and other suspicious signals, and returns No issues, Inconclusive, or Suspicious with a written explanation. It never auto-rejects on its own unless you explicitly turn on automatic rejection of Suspicious candidates. A paid add-on.

Screener (AI Scoring):

Reads every application against criteria you define for the job and scores candidates, surfacing the strongest matches at the top of the pipeline. Included in the standard plan. Unlike the other two teammates, it has no organisation-level settings page — it's configured entirely per job.

Coordinator:

Calls candidates to schedule interviews: introduces itself, checks availability against interviewer calendars, books the interview, and sends invitations, all in one call. It retries on no-answer, can be called back by the candidate directly, and can chase no-shows. Every call is recorded and transcribed onto the candidate's record. A paid add-on that also requires buying at least one phone number for it to call from.

  • Every teammate needs two independent switches on before it does anything: enabled for the organisation (Settings → AI & Kula teammates) and added to the specific job (that job's AI Teammates tab).

  • Turning one on for the account never starts it working on jobs where it hasn't also been added — this is deliberate.

Good to know

  • "Screener" and "AI Scoring" are the same underlying feature under two names — Teammates branding calls it Screener, older parts of the product and support content call it AI Scoring. If a colleague asks about "the AI Screener" and you only know "AI Scoring," you're talking about the same thing.

  • Only the Fraud detector and the Coordinator are paid add-ons that need unlocking by Kula support. AI Scoring/Screener and AI Notetaker are included in the standard plan for at least some accounts — confirm your account's specific entitlements with your Kula rep rather than assuming based on this article alone.

  • AI Scoring has real, reported accuracy issues that have come up during its ongoing revamp — including a bug where the overall score displayed as 100 incorrectly, and a separate report that scoring marked candidates down unfairly for language proficiency. Treat an unexpected or extreme score as worth spot-checking rather than taking at face value, especially if scoring behavior seems to have changed recently.

  • AI Scoring and resume parsing share underlying infrastructure and have gone down together — a real outage affected resume parsing and AI scoring at the same time, since scoring depends on the parsed resume data. If one looks broken, check whether the other is too.

  • Candidates are told when AI is involved. With the Fraud detector enabled, an AI usage disclaimer appears on your career page when someone applies. Coordinator calls are recorded and transcribed, and both are visible on the candidate's record.

FAQ

  • Is "Screener" different from "AI Scoring"? No — same feature, two names depending on where you encounter it in the product or documentation.

  • Which AI features cost extra? The Fraud detector and the Coordinator are paid add-ons that Kula support has to unlock for your account. AI Scoring/Screener and AI Notetaker are included in the standard plan for at least some accounts — confirm specifics with your Kula rep.

  • Can a Hiring Manager configure AI Scoring for their own job? Not by default. The usual workaround is adding them to the hiring team with the Recruiter role, which also grants broader job-editing permissions — not just Scoring Agent access.

  • Can I turn off AI scoring for just one question in a scorecard? Not yet — you can disable it for an entire scorecard, but per-question control is a logged feature request, not shipped.

  • Does the AI Notetaker work for phone interviews? No, not currently — it supports video interviews on Google Meet and Teams. Phone-call support is an open request.

  • How do I get the Coordinator or Fraud detector turned on? Contact Kula support to unlock the add-on, then an admin still needs to configure it in Settings → AI & Kula teammates before it can be added to jobs.
